Det har ocks\u00e5 blivit allt sv\u00e5rare att uppt\u00e4cka nya antibiotika. AI har just gjort det mycket enklare.<\/p>\n<h2>Modeller f\u00f6r djupinl\u00e4rning<\/h2>\n<p>Utmaningen med att skapa ett nytt antibiotikum \u00e4r att det finns n\u00e4stan o\u00e4ndligt m\u00e5nga molekyl\u00e4ra arrangemang och det \u00e4r sv\u00e5rt att veta vilket av dem som kommer att d\u00f6da en specifik bakterie. F\u00f6r att komplicera saker och ting m\u00e5ste forskarna se till att den nya f\u00f6reningen inte heller d\u00f6dar friska celler.<\/p>\n<p>MIT-teamet skapade en databas med 39.000 olika f\u00f6reningar och deras effekter p\u00e5 Staphylococcus aureus. De tog ocks\u00e5 h\u00e4nsyn till f\u00f6reningarnas cytotoxicitet genom att sp\u00e5ra deras effekter p\u00e5 m\u00e4nskliga lever-, skelettmuskel- och lungceller.<\/p>\n<p>Information om f\u00f6reningarnas kemiska strukturer lades ocks\u00e5 till i datasetet, som sedan anv\u00e4ndes f\u00f6r att tr\u00e4na en AI-modell med djupinl\u00e4rning.<\/p>\n<p>Baserat p\u00e5 det stora datasetet kunde modellen l\u00e4ra sig vilka kemiska strukturer som mest sannolikt d\u00f6dade bakterierna och samtidigt undvek negativa effekter p\u00e5 friska celler.<\/p>\n<p>N\u00e4r AI-modellen hade tr\u00e4nats anv\u00e4ndes den f\u00f6r att screena 12 miljoner kommersiellt tillg\u00e4ngliga substanser. Modellen identifierade molekyler fr\u00e5n fem olika klasser som den f\u00f6rutsp\u00e5dde skulle d\u00f6da MRSA-bakterierna.<\/p>\n<p>Baserat p\u00e5 den betydligt smalare listan \u00f6ver kandidatf\u00f6reningar fick forskarna 280 f\u00f6reningar att testa mot MRSA-bakterier som odlats i en labbsk\u00e5l. Deras tester ledde till uppt\u00e4ckten att tv\u00e5 av f\u00f6reningarna reducerade MRSA med en faktor 10.<\/p>\n<h2>F\u00f6rklarlig AI<\/h2>\n<p>AI-modeller ger oss ofta anv\u00e4ndbara svar, men de kan vara outgrundliga svarta l\u00e5dor som inte ger oss n\u00e5gon inblick i hur de kommer fram till svaret.<\/p>\n<p>Felix Wong, postdoktor vid MIT och Harvard och en av studiens huvudf\u00f6rfattare tillsammans med Erica Zheng, s\u00e4ger: \"Det vi ville g\u00f6ra i den h\u00e4r studien var att \u00f6ppna den svarta l\u00e5dan.
