CIDs compel entities or individuals to provide information, documents, or testimony relevant to an investigation. Information can range from corporate records and emails to financial statements and other data pertinent to the agency&#8217;s inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>The objective behind issuing a CID is to gather the necessary evidence to determine whether any laws have been breached, especially in cases of deceptive, fraudulent, or anti-competitive practices. As these demands carry legal weight, non-compliance can lead to legal consequences.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel Levine, director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC, emphasized CIDs&#8217; legal force and the potential consequences for companies that fail to comply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This aligns the FTC&#8217;s approach to AI with its regulatory practices in other industries, signaling that technology firms must diligently organize their AI-related records on product development, marketing claims, and third-party oversight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTC chair Lina Khan has established quite a fearsome reputation for the Commission&#8217;s incisive style under her leadership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/06\/ftc-chair-lina-khan-urges-early-vigilance-on-ai-to-prevent-abuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khan warned AI companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that enforcement agencies would use current laws to act against them if necessary, highlighting that they weren\u2019t immune from the law just because generative AI was fresh and unregulated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s not the only time she\u2019s stated AI companies are under scrutiny. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siepr.stanford.edu\/news\/ftcs-lina-khan-warns-big-tech-over-ai\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking at Stanford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Khan said, \u201cMuch is uncertain about what the future of this technology will look like,\u201d \u201cBut the FTC has made clear that there is no exemption from the [antitrust] laws on the books.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accelerated investigations and data gathering<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC is extending its ability to gather factual information about AI&#8217;s impact on consumer protection and fair competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies must maintain thorough documentation of their AI systems, including training data, validation studies, case studies, and monitoring reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC is also ramping up its investigations into algorithmic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/07\/unmasking-the-deep-seated-biases-in-ai-systems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fairness and bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stating businesses must proactively address these issues throughout the AI product development lifecycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, companies must ensure transparency and accountability in any third-party collaborations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these regulatory developments, the FTC has launched initiatives like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/contests\/ftc-voice-cloning-challenge\">Voice Cloning Challenge<\/a> to protect users from fraud and privacy violations involving synthetic voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This marks a significant step in aligning technological advancement with responsible oversight, pushing the FTC\u2019s agenda under Khan further into the generative AI industry. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Comiss\u00e3o Federal do Com\u00e9rcio (FTC) alargou os seus poderes de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o sobre a ind\u00fastria da IA.
