In de loop van de maritieme geschiedenis zijn er veel sterke verhalen geweest over deze golven die schepen verrasten.<\/p>\n<p>Het eerste geregistreerde bewijs van een rogue wave werd vastgelegd in 1995 toen een golf van 26 meter op het Noorse olieplatform Draupner inbeukte. Sindsdien zijn zes cruiseschepen getroffen door rogue waves.<\/p>\n<p>Alle schepen liepen schade op, met enkele gerapporteerde verwondingen, en een passagier aan boord van de Viking Polaris overleed nadat het schip in december 2022 werd geraakt.<\/p>\n<p>De schijnbaar willekeurige aard van rogue waves heeft het voor wetenschappers moeilijk gemaakt om een manier te vinden om te voorspellen wanneer en waar ze zouden kunnen optreden. Ze pasten <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/nl\/2023\/10\/machine-learning-reveals-the-contents-of-ancient-scrolls-and-stone-tablets\/\">machinaal leren<\/a> de enorme hoeveelheid gegevens in de Free Ocean Wave Dataset (FOWD).<\/p>\n<p>De FOWD is een catalogus van meer dan 4 miljard golven, verzameld door boeien op 158 locaties over de hele wereld, samen met gegevens over wind, temperatuur van het zeeoppervlak en barometerdruk.<\/p>\n<p>Het neurale netwerk dat de onderzoekers trainden, kon vervolgens de waarschijnlijkheid van een rogue wave voorspellen op basis van een set oceaan- en weersomstandigheden.<\/p>\n<p>Dit soort AI-voorspellers is een black box. Het geeft je misschien het antwoord dat je zoekt, maar dat is vaak niet genoeg voor wetenschappers.
