En GraphCast heeft het zojuist ruimschoots verslagen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.google\/discover\/blog\/graphcast-ai-model-for-faster-and-more-accurate-global-weather-forecasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GraphCast<\/a> was in staat om het weer 10 dagen van tevoren sneller en nauwkeuriger te voorspellen dan ECMWF in meer dan 90% van 1.380 verificatiedoelen.<\/p>\n<p>Weten of je je paraplu mee moet nemen naar je werk is handig, maar extreme weersomstandigheden nauwkeurig voorspellen is waar GraphCast een significante impact zou kunnen hebben.<\/p>\n<p>In september, toen orkaan Lee nog 9 dagen te gaan had voordat hij aan land zou gaan, werkten weerbureaus hard om te voorspellen welke stad het zwaarst getroffen zou worden door de storm.<\/p>\n<p>Het IFS-model gaf een ruwe voorspelling dat de orkaan enkele steden in het noordoosten zou raken of mogelijk helemaal zou missen. Ondertussen voorspelde GraphCast dat orkaan Lee Nova Scotia zou treffen.<\/p>\n<p>Pas 3 dagen later kwam IFS tot dezelfde conclusie, die uiteindelijk juist bleek te zijn. Hierbij worden enorme hoeveelheden weersensorgegevens verzameld die vervolgens worden ingevoerd in complexe vergelijkingen die door supercomputers worden verwerkt.<\/p>\n<p>De vergelijkingen worden aangepast door teams van experts en worden steeds nauwkeuriger, maar ze vereisen nog steeds veel rekenkracht van de computer en het duurt lang om tot een voorspelling te komen.<\/p>\n<p>NWP probeert in wezen algoritmen te gebruiken om te modelleren hoe de atmosfeer werkt om te voorspellen wat er gaat gebeuren.<\/p>\n<p>Wat GraphCast doet is veel eenvoudiger, maar kan niet worden gedaan met traditionele vergelijkingen.<\/p>\n<p>Het GraphCast-model maakt gebruik van MLWP (machine learning-based weather prediction) en is getraind op ongeveer 50 jaar aan historische weergegevens.<\/p>\n<p>Het neemt dan die gegevens en in plaats van een model van onze atmosfeer te maken, zoekt het naar patronen in de gegevens.
