Maar we weten dat het aantal kleine satellietconstellaties overal toeneemt.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De snelheid van de signalen die worden voortgebracht door aardbevingen op zee wordt be\u00efnvloed door de dichtheid van geladen deeltjes in de ionosfeer van de aarde, die zich ongeveer 300 tot 350 kilometer boven het oppervlak bevindt. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wanneer een tsunami schokgolven genereert die opstijgen in de atmosfeer, veranderen ze de dichtheid van deze geladen deeltjes, wat leidt tot kleine maar detecteerbare wijzigingen in de signalen die door satellieten worden ontvangen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/scientists-look-to-skies-to-improve-tsunami-detection\">Eerder onderzoek<\/a> uitgevoerd door NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory en de Sapienza Universiteit van Rome in Itali\u00eb leidde tot een rekenmethode om fluctuaties in de dichtheid van geladen deeltjes als gevolg van tsunami's te meten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hierop voortbouwend zetten Constantinou en zijn team de gegevens, die oorspronkelijk eendimensionaal waren, om in tweedimensionale beelden. Deze beelden werden vervolgens door AI-modellen geanalyseerd op tekenen die verband houden met tsunami's.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Het team trainde hun AI-systeem met behulp van gegevens van drie specifieke door aardbevingen veroorzaakte tsunami's: de tsunami's in Chili in 2010, in Japan in 2011 en in Canada in 2012.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ze testten de effectiviteit van het model op een vierde tsunami veroorzaakt door de Illapel aardbeving in Chili in 2015. De AI werd onder de loep genomen om te beoordelen hoe goed deze tsunami-ge\u00efnduceerde veranderingen kon onderscheiden van standaard ionosferische achtergrondruis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Om valse positieven te minimaliseren, filterden de onderzoekers storingen die werden veroorzaakt door grondstations die communiceerden met de satellieten boven hun hoofd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volgens Quentin Brissaud van NORSAR, een Noorse stichting voor seismisch onderzoek die niet betrokken is bij het onderzoek, leverde deze methodologie \"behoorlijk goede resultaten\" op met een detectienauwkeurigheid van meer dan 90%. Brissaud wees er echter op dat er meer gegevens nodig zijn om de betrouwbaarheid van dit systeem voor verschillende soorten tsunami's vast te stellen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quentin Brissaud merkt op dat \"de zeldzaamheid van enorme tsunami's het een uitdaging maakt om zulke gebeurtenissen te analyseren en te voorspellen\".<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Een van de uitdagingen bij het opzetten van een wereldwijd waarschuwingssysteem voor tsunami's is de behoefte aan het internationaal delen van gegevens. Zoals Constantinou zegt: \"Gegevens zijn vaak in handen van regeringen of commerci\u00eble partners die de satellieten beheren. Er is niet \u00e9\u00e9n plek om de gegevens voor een wereldwijd systeem te verzamelen.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meer over het onderzoek<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deze <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2308.04611.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onderzoek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combineert satellietgegevens met machine learning (ML) om veranderingen in de atmosfeer van de aarde veroorzaakt door tsunami's te analyseren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoewel de opsporing van tsunami's recentelijk is verbeterd, worden veel kusten nog steeds onvoldoende gedekt door systemen voor vroegtijdige waarschuwing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Zo werkt het:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onderzoekers hebben een AI-gebaseerd raamwerk ontwikkeld om vroege tekenen van tsunami's te identificeren door het monitoren van Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TID's) in de ionosfeer van de aarde. Deze verstoringen be\u00efnvloeden de totale elektroneninhoud (TEC), die kan worden gedetecteerd via het wereldwijde satellietnavigatiesysteem (GNSS).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deze benadering maakt gebruik van gegevens van meerdere satellietsystemen zoals GPS, Galileo, GLONASS en BeiDou. Het biedt realtime dekking op open zee en vormt een waardevolle aanvulling op geografische gebieden die niet toegankelijk zijn voor traditionele waarschuwingssystemen op basis van boeien.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Het AI-model maakt gebruik van Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN's) die zijn getraind op historische gegevens van de tsunami's van 2010 Maule, 2011 Tohoku en 2012 Haida-Gwaii.
