Onderzoekers van het Dartmouth College ontwikkelden MoodCapture, een smartphone-app die AI gebruikt om gezichtskenmerken te analyseren voor vroegtijdige detectie van depressie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Het stigma dat geassocieerd wordt met geestelijke gezondheid<\/a> is een belangrijke reden waarom mensen een dapper gezicht opzetten, zelfs als ze zich down voelen. Dit is ook de reden waarom we meer moeite doen om te glimlachen als we met mensen omgaan of een selfie nemen die we op sociale media willen zetten.<\/p>\n

Wanneer we naar beneden kijken om onze telefoon te gebruiken, zijn we ons er meestal niet van bewust dat er een camera naar ons terug kijkt. MoodCapture gebruikt de front-facing camera van een smartphone om regelmatig authentieke, onbewaakte gezichtsuitdrukkingen vast te leggen wanneer een gebruiker zijn telefoon ontgrendelt. Vervolgens gebruikt het een AI-algoritme om continu te controleren op vroege tekenen van depressie.<\/p>\n

De onderzoekers trainden hun algoritme met 125.000 foto's van 177 deelnemers met de diagnose depressieve stoornis.<\/p>\n

De foto's werden gedurende 90 dagen gemaakt terwijl de deelnemers een app op hun telefoon gebruikten om drie keer per dag een korte vragenlijst over de gezondheid van pati\u00ebnten (PHQ-8) te beantwoorden.<\/p>\n

Wanneer de deelnemer antwoordde op het item \"Ik heb me down, depressief of hopeloos gevoeld\", maakte de app een foto van het gezicht van de persoon. De pati\u00ebnten stemden ermee in dat er een foto werd gemaakt, maar wisten niet precies wanneer dat gebeurde.<\/p>\n

Naast de gezichtskenmerken werd het AI-model ook getraind op de telefoonhoek, dominante kleur, lichtomstandigheden, fotolocatie en achtergrondelementen die op de foto's aanwezig waren.<\/p>\n

Met behulp van machine learning en deep learning cre\u00eberden de onderzoekers een model dat leerde welke genuanceerde gezichtsuitdrukkingen en contextuele achtergrondelementen correleerden met depressie.<\/p>\n

Wereldwijd lijden miljoenen mensen aan depressies, waarbij ernstige gevallen verantwoordelijk zijn voor 800.000 zelfmoorden per jaar. Vroegtijdige opsporing van depressie kan ertoe leiden dat meer mensen toegang krijgen tot de juiste en tijdige zorg.<\/p>\n

De functionaliteit van de app is indrukwekkend, maar de onderzoekers merken in hun papier<\/a> dat apps voor het monitoren van de geestelijke gezondheid, zoals MoodCapture, een heleboel lastige ethische kwesties met zich meebrengen.<\/p>\n
