This brings its total commitment to a staggering $4 billion. This deal, valued based on Anthropic&#8217;s last $18.4 billion valuation, is one of the biggest bets of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swami Sivasubramanian, Amazon&#8217;s vice president of data and AI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/company-news\/amazon-anthropic-ai-investment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said of the partnership<\/a>: &#8220;Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers&#8217; experiences, and look forward to what&#8217;s next.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s move to invest in Anthropic is timely, following Microsoft&#8217;s major coup by bringing ex-DeepMind\u2019s Mustafa Suleyman from Inflection to head its CoPilot team. Microsoft later paid $620 million for the rights to sell access to Inflection\u2019s Pi models through its Azure Cloud.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon will maintain a minority stake in Anthropic without a board seat, indicating a partnership to foster innovation while allowing it to maintain its strategic autonomy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is key, as Anthropic has carved a distinctive niche in AI research with its focus on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/10\/can-constitutional-ai-solve-the-issue-of-problematic-ai-behavior\/\">Constitutional AI<\/a>.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon&#8217;s willingness to let Anthropic maintain its creative direction is reassuring. It&#8217;s questionable whether Microsoft affords OpenAI that opportunity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Attention from regulators<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Tech\u2019s tactics to mop up smaller AI players haven\u2019t gone unnoticed by regulators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), under the leadership of Chair Lina Khan, who has a reputation for ruthlessly pursuing tech deals, announced a market inquiry into the investments and partnerships between AI developers and major cloud service providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/11\/the-ftc-authorizes-new-powers-of-investigation-and-compliance-for-ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the FTC announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it would enhance its Civil Investigative Demands (CID) for AI companies. Khan said at that time, \u201cMuch is uncertain about what the future of this technology will look like.\u201d \u201cBut the FTC has made clear that there is no exemption from the [antitrust] laws on the books.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC has questioned OpenAI about its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/07\/ftc-launches-investigation-into-openai-over-potential-regulatory-violations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dealings with Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and warned Reddit about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2024\/03\/the-ftc-question-reddit-over-data-licensing-ahead-of-its-ipo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licensing its data ahead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its recent IPO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each acquisition or investment attempts to seize or maintain dominance in the rapidly evolving AI arena, where alliances are both complex and vital to success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon kunngjorde en kolossal investering p\u00e5 $2,75 milliarder kroner i AI-oppstartsbedriften Anthropic.
