{"id":9917,"date":"2024-02-10T19:03:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-10T19:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/?p=9917"},"modified":"2024-02-10T19:14:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-10T19:14:36","slug":"abu-dhabi-based-ai-firm-g42-cuts-ties-with-chinese-firms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/it\/2024\/02\/abu-dhabi-based-ai-firm-g42-cuts-ties-with-chinese-firms\/","title":{"rendered":"L'azienda di AI G42 di Abu Dhabi taglia i legami con le imprese cinesi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Abu Dhabi-based AI firm G42 has sold its stakes in several Chinese entities, including ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G42 wants to avoid criticism from the US regarding its connections with Chinese businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technology investment branch of G42, known as 42XFund, boasts a hefty $10 billion in technology investments, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/82473ec4-fa7a-43f2-897c-ceb9b10ffd7a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed to the Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its complete withdrawal from investments in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42XFund in 2022, originally a collaboration between G42 and the Abu Dhabi Growth Fund (ADG), is a strategic partnership to amplify Abu Dhabi&#8217;s influence in the tech sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the fund remained tight-lipped about specific transactions and the total of its Chinese investments, insiders confirmed it involved shares in ByteDance, estimated to be worth around $100 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UAE\u2019s agnostic stance to both the US and China puts them in a fairly unique position to deal with both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peng Xiao, G42\u2019s CEO, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/12\/us-concerns-over-the-uaes-ai-industry-and-ties-to-china-are-rising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said in a December interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Financial Times that he acknowledges playing both sides isn\u2019t really an option amid geopolitical frictions between the US and China: &#8220;In order for us to further our relationship \u2014 which we cherish \u2014 with our US partners, we simply cannot do much more with [previous] Chinese partners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xiao continued, \u201cThe impression we are getting from [the] US government and US partners is, we need to be very cautious\u2026 we simply cannot do much more work with Chinese partners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G42, under the chairmanship of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the UAE&#8217;s influential national security adviser, is involved in a wide array of AI initiatives spanning health, life sciences, geospatial mapping, and generative AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company, supported by substantial investments from the UAE&#8217;s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and the US private equity giant Silver Lake, has collaborated with both US tech giants, including Microsoft and OpenAI, and Chinese tech firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G42 is sensitive to its position and eager to appease the US, as it relies on semiconductors from Nvidia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenAI&#8217;s Sam Altman has been discussing with Sheikh Tahnoon about starting a new semiconductor venture and later topped headlines as he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2024\/02\/openai-ceo-sam-altman-seeks-trillions-for-outlandish-ai-chip-project\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeks trillions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of dollars of funding for an internationally collaborative chip manufacturing plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>L'azienda di AI G42, con sede ad Abu Dhabi, ha venduto le sue partecipazioni in diverse entit\u00e0 cinesi, tra cui ByteDance, la societ\u00e0 madre di TikTok.
