Selon certaines estimations, 40% des adultes aux \u00c9tats-Unis et en Europe, et 75% des moins de 18 ans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Les entreprises sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es dans l'IA envisagent un avenir o\u00f9 leurs produits seront int\u00e9gr\u00e9s \u00e0 toutes nos activit\u00e9s et \u00e0 tous les appareils que nous utilisons, mais l'IA n'est pas aliment\u00e9e par de l'air. Comme toutes les technologies, elle n\u00e9cessite de l'\u00e9nergie.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ai.stackexchange.com\/questions\/38970\/how-much-energy-consumption-is-involved-in-chat-gpt-responses-being-generated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">document r\u00e9cent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Le mod\u00e8le BLOOM a utilis\u00e9 433 MWh pour s'entra\u00eener, et le mod\u00e8le GPT-3 a eu besoin de 1 287 MWh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le ChatGPT d'OpenAI a besoin d'environ 564 MWh par jour pour calculer les r\u00e9ponses aux questions des utilisateurs. Un centre de donn\u00e9es de 15 m\u00e9gawatts peut consommer jusqu'\u00e0 360 000 gallons d'eau par jour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L'Agence internationale de l'\u00e9nergie (AIE) a mis en garde contre l'impact plus large des centres de donn\u00e9es, qui repr\u00e9sentent d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus de 1,5 milliard d'euros. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/buildings\/data-centres-and-data-transmission-networks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,3% de la consommation mondiale d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ce chiffre est appel\u00e9 \u00e0 augmenter \u00e0 mesure que les demandes d'IA et de traitement des donn\u00e9es s'intensifient, ce qui met encore plus \u00e0 l'\u00e9preuve l'infrastructure \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique mondiale et amplifie l'appel \u00e0 des pratiques plus durables au sein de l'industrie de l'IA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Boston Consulting Group estime que d'ici la fin de la d\u00e9cennie, la consommation d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 des centres de donn\u00e9es am\u00e9ricains pourrait tripler par rapport aux niveaux de 2022 et atteindre 390 t\u00e9rawattheures, soit environ 7,5% de la demande d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pr\u00e9vue pour le pays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> L'UE a \u00e9galement d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que les besoins en \u00e9nergie des centres de donn\u00e9es <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/01\/24\/iea_report\">doubleront d'ici 2026<\/a>. Rien qu'aux \u00c9tats-Unis ou en Chine, les centres de donn\u00e9es pourraient consommer l'\u00e9quivalent de la production annuelle de 80 \u00e0 130 centrales \u00e9lectriques au charbon d'ici 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dans le pire des cas, le graphique ci-dessous montre que les centres de donn\u00e9es pourraient consommer quelque 8 000 TWh d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 d'ici 2030, soit 30% de la consommation mondiale d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 actuelle. En raison de la r\u00e9sistance de la communaut\u00e9, les propositions visant \u00e0 utiliser des g\u00e9n\u00e9rateurs diesel en cas de p\u00e9nurie d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mises de c\u00f4t\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-25\/ai-needs-so-much-power-that-old-coal-plants-are-sticking-around\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg rapporte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> que dans la r\u00e9gion de Kansas City, la construction d'un centre de donn\u00e9es et d'une usine de batteries pour v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques a n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 une telle quantit\u00e9 d'\u00e9nergie que les plans de d\u00e9mant\u00e8lement d'une centrale au charbon ont \u00e9t\u00e9 report\u00e9s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ari Peskoe, de l'Electricity Law Initiative de la Harvard Law School, a mis en garde contre les cons\u00e9quences d\u00e9sastreuses potentielles si les services publics ne s'adaptent pas : \"Les nouvelles charges sont retard\u00e9es, les usines ne peuvent pas \u00eatre mises en service, notre potentiel de croissance \u00e9conomique est diminu\u00e9\", explique-t-il.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Le pire sc\u00e9nario est que les services publics ne s'adaptent pas et maintiennent en ligne les anciennes capacit\u00e9s de production d'\u00e9nergie fossile et qu'ils n'\u00e9voluent pas au-del\u00e0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rob Gramlich, de Grid Strategies, s'est fait l'\u00e9cho de ces pr\u00e9occupations, soulignant \u00e0 Bloomberg le risque de coupures d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 en cas de retard dans l'am\u00e9lioration des infrastructures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les d\u00e9fis du secteur des services publics ne se limitent pas aux centres de donn\u00e9es. La l\u00e9gislation et les mesures incitatives r\u00e9centes stimulent la construction d'usines de semi-conducteurs, de v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques et de batteries, ce qui contribue \u00e9galement \u00e0 l'augmentation de la demande d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Par exemple, Evergy, qui dessert la r\u00e9gion de Kansas City, a retard\u00e9 la mise \u00e0 l'arr\u00eat d'une centrale au charbon des ann\u00e9es 1960 pour faire face \u00e0 la demande de nouveaux d\u00e9veloppements, notamment un centre de donn\u00e9es Meta Platforms et une usine de batteries pour v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques Panasonic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malgr\u00e9 la pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence de nombreuses entreprises technologiques et de fabricants de technologies propres pour les \u00e9nergies renouvelables, la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 est tout autre. Il est difficile d'envisager comment cette consommation d'\u00e9nergie peut \u00eatre compens\u00e9e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La situation n'est pas propre aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Au niveau mondial, la Chine, l'Inde, le Royaume-Uni et l'Union europ\u00e9enne ont tous \u00e9mis des avertissements concernant l'augmentation de la demande d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 li\u00e9e \u00e0 l'IA.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Comment allons-nous payer ?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c0 mesure que les technologies de l'intelligence artificielle deviennent omnipr\u00e9sentes, leur empreinte \u00e9cologique se heurte aux ambitions mondiales d'un avenir sans \u00e9missions nettes.
