{"id":5788,"date":"2023-09-25T08:28:18","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T08:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/?p=5788"},"modified":"2023-09-25T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T08:44:19","slug":"mit-professor-highlights-the-risks-of-intense-ai-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/fr\/2023\/09\/mit-professor-highlights-the-risks-of-intense-ai-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Un professeur du MIT met en \u00e9vidence les risques d'un d\u00e9veloppement intensif de l'IA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Max Tegmark, MIT professor, physicist, and co-founder of the Future of Life Institute, has raised concerns about the relentless pace of AI development.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He suggests that the intense competition among tech firms makes robust self-regulation less likely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Within the space of just one year, major players such as OpenAI and Google have released at least two generations of AI models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GPT-4 represented a massive improvement over GPT-3.5, beating its parameter account by some five to 10 times\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Tegmark spearheaded an open letter that called for a six-month pause in developing advanced AI systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The letter received massive support from industry leaders, politicians, and various public figures, with over 30,000 signatories, including Elon Musk and Apple&#8217;s co-founder, Steve Wozniak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter vividly described the potential dangers of unbridled AI development. It urged governments to intervene if major AI players, such as Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft, couldn&#8217;t reach a consensus on how to harness AI\u2019s benefits while mitigating its risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) compared AI risks to nuclear war<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following that first letter, the CAIS issued a statement backed by numerous tech leaders and academics, which compared the societal risks posed by AI with those of pandemics and nuclear war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/05\/act-on-ai-now-or-face-extinction-experts-warn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAIS statement said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cMitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, despite the sentiment that self-regulation is necessary until regulation comes into force, the tech industry largely continued at the same pace of AI advancement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegmark reflected on the letter&#8217;s impact and the reasons behind its limited success in halting AI development, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/sep\/21\/ai-focused-tech-firms-locked-race-bottom-warns-mit-professor-max-tegmark\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating to the Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI felt that privately a lot of corporate leaders I talked to wanted [a pause], but they were trapped in this race to the bottom against each other. So no company can pause alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Tegmark noted that debates surrounding increased political awareness about AI safety are ramping up, pointing to US Senate hearings, Chuck Schumer&#8217;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/09\/the-first-ai-forum-when-tech-titans-lawmakers-and-critics-converge\/\">AI Insight Forum<\/a>, and November&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyai.com\/2023\/08\/bletchley-park-set-to-host-the-uks-global-ai-safety-summit-in-november\/\">global AI Safety Summit<\/a> in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking forward, Tegmark cautioned against viewing the development of a &#8220;god-like general intelligence&#8221; as a distant threat, referencing some in the AI community who believe its realization might be closer than many anticipate \u2013 namely, OpenAI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegmark concluded by stressing the importance of safety standards in AI development and voiced concerns over open-source AI models, like Meta&#8217;s Llama 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing a parallel to other potent technologies, he cautioned, \u201cDangerous technology should not be open source, whether it&#8217;s bio-weapons or software.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Max Tegmark, professeur au MIT, physicien et cofondateur du Future of Life Institute, s'est inqui\u00e9t\u00e9 du rythme effr\u00e9n\u00e9 du d\u00e9veloppement de l'IA.
